The transfer of files is aking too long, it seems
The transfer of files to the hard drive is taking too long, it seems it has blocked and I cannot stop it. Shall I wait or can I swich off the hard drive pressing down he power button?

It never hurts to wait a while. Often times a computer will slow but not lock up. However if it really is taking too long you dont have much of a choice and you have to shut it down with a power switch. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. Hope your backups are up to date as well.
