The water doesn't drain or spin out unless I open the lid. Then as soon as I do the water drains and the clothes spin out. It will continue to agitate the clothes even when it should be on the spin cycle

It sounds like your lid switch is working backwards. It is supposed to prevent the spin if the lid is up and allow it if the lid is down.
