There a new clicking noise coming from my engine on a 2002 a class merc, its not always been there and now my car cut out then re started after several times with the engine light coming on, could the clicking noise be related to the car cutting out and engine light and what could it be

Yes that could happen. You should get this checked with out running the engine as you could do damage and cost you big time. If the check engine light flashes Do not even try to start it up as this is telling you something serious is wrong.
