There a squeeking noise in the steering colum of my 2002 escalade. Sounds like it maybe the speed odometer cable...If so is there anyway to check this out....and if so how do you change it

I have a new noise on my 2000 DeVille and it does vary when I vary the speed. It sounds like a fan motor buzz, but gets faster when I accelerate. Any idea what this could be? I first thought it was coming from the speedometer section on the dash, but when I listened closer it seemed to be under the hood close to the windshield.
