There is a cloth inside betwen the fan and the intake grill is it supposed to be there and if so does it need changing or cleaning it seems to be made of a composite material. we inherited the hood so are unable to find any instructions regarding it

Some range hoods do contain a light filter material to prevent grease entering the fan. It can (and should be) cleaned regularly by hand in warm soapy water. Allow to dry and replace.
