There is no cooling water coming out the exhaust and I am presuming water pump damage? I have been giving the motor a very quick startup and shutdown before putting in the water. Friends are advising strongly against this and suggesting that this may have damaged the pump. Any comments?

Not really sure what you mean, but...if you have coolant coming out of your exhaust pipe, you may be looking at a leaking head gasket. See if the spark plug shows signs of coolant. Im assuming this is what you are asking, as the message isn't clear.
