Sure but you'll lose all your programs, files and documents, etc. Unless you are using W10, your best bet is to buy a new drive ($20-50) rather than wipe and reformat the existing one. You don't say how old it is but you could do that, just to have the current hard drive fail later.
1. Get the new HDD and use free software to "clone" the old hard drive to the new. 2. Or start over, install the OS - (W7 recommended) then use the File & transfer settings to move - only your documents and files, not your programs - to the new HDD. You'd need to reinstall any other programs you have on the old drive.
Here's a great link - don't be intimidated - if you print out the directions and follow them (or get a friend to help) it's not that difficult.
