This is the 2nd summer we have used our Hayward pump all of a sudden it pushes water into the pool for filter but when set to backwash or waste it hums for a minute then throws the breaker

Need more info, model and over all condition. I would check the capacitor on the motor first and then the multi-port valve. Make sure you are shutting the pump off when moving the handle on the multi-port .
