Timming engine went to have my car smogged, tech said it didn't pass because the timming was off. Didn't know you could time this engine. I've timed many engines before, but older cars that had points and condenser, this car doesn't. How do I time this one. The car in question is a 1988 Dodge Aries, 2.2 or 2.5 liter engine
They may be referring to the timing belt. It may have skipped a tooth or two altering the timing. Replace belt & align pulley dots properly. Top pully dot dead bottom . Bottom pulley dot dead top. You need to remove bolts for side motor mount & raise engine to remove & replace belt. Belt is housed by two plastic covers. Good luck!
