Its also possible that if you have changed your vehicle, the new vehicle might have a special type of windscreen heated windscreens or heat refective which stops the GPS Signal getting through to your unit, I had the same problem, but seems to work now, i know its not the unit, the same symptoms also occured with a different unit in the same vehicle. if you think its the windscreen you can buy a ariel which allows the tomtom to pick up the signal.
A component fault on the units internal antenna circuit board.

All the above except number 3 will require proffessional investigation. if its a software fault then you may be able to recover data by a re-install through TomTom Home or by recovery backup ( you did make a backup of your SD card , didn't you ? ) of your SD card.

This problem can have several causes.
- A component fault on the units internal antenna circuit board.
