There are two silver screws on the top. One is near the takeup lever the other is under the lid for the bobbin winder. Do NOT mess with the plastic screws near the bobbin winder!
To release the two silver spring-loaded screws, use a screwdriver. Push down and turn counterclockwise at the same time. The screw will pop up. Then do the other one.
Be sure to study how the top comes off--look underneath the lid BEFORE pulling to completely off the machine! There are projections underneath that must fit into specific holes. Getting the top back on has frequently been a challenge for me--trying to get those projections back where they belong and also juggling the stitch selector guides. Just take it slow and easy--patience!
