Tranny fluid being burned in a cloud of smoke
The car is a 1990 Loyal wagon and was lightly rearended a couple of days ago. The engine runs ok but since the accident the oil level has increased (smells like tranny fluid) and the car smokes so badly that it seems that it is fogging the road behind me. Someone mentioned a modulator valve. Any ideas and if it is how difficult to change the modulator valve?

If you have the 3 spd automatic, your problem is the vacuum modulator which is screwed onto the right side of the transmission. The modulator tells the tranny what the manifold vacuum is (thus load) and the tranny shift points change accordingly. Your modulator diaphragm has a tiny hole in it. Easy fix.
