There are different "publications." Non-Patent Literature or scientific articles are publications independent of the patent process. Those are published by authors and reviewed by peers. If you publish an NPL before you file your patent it will limit the number of countries you can patent in - it will anticipate your patent. Patent publications are the published patent application that occurs before the patent is examined. Most major patent offices publish the patent application before it issues and many have "opposition" where the public can submit articles and patent references against the patent. Patents and literature can co-exist - getting a patent does not prevent inventors from publishing their findings in a scientific journal. The inventor/author can even cite their patent publication in their literature article. NOTE that publishing your literature article before filing your patent application will limit your rights.
