Turbo 400 transmission is making a loud metal to metal noise when shifting from drive to reverse or park to reverse
When shifting between drive and reverse there is a loud metallic sound like metal hitting metal. when listening under the vehicle it sounds like its coming from the transmission oil pan area. has new motor mounts, new transmission mount. transmission was rebuilt and should have no more than a couple thousand miles on it. no parking on hills. newer u joints in drive line. when I try turning the driveline alone there is normal spin before gears stop it, and now side to side slop type movement. What could the loud sound be? also when going into drive its a low thud sounding from closer to the torque converter but going into reverse it has the loud metal to metal clank near the transmission oil pan

Could be internal piston housing failure for the bands
pull the pan and see what metal is in the pan
there is an aluminium housing that breaks away from the transmission body proper and is replaceable
that would be the cheapest way for starters
if it is what I suspect you will see the broken housing under the adjuster nut
pulling the pan is easier than pulling the transmission and if it can be fixed at that stage will be cheaper than pulling the tranny
