Sure it's possible. Is the flywheel gear worn? You have to be sure you have the correct clearance between the starter gear and the flywheel ring gear. You need to measure the gap between the top of the starter gear tooth and the bottom of the space between the ring gear teeth. It should be between 0.01" and 0.06". Use shims if necessary. Also be sure to use the proper mounting bolts. They help line the starter up correctly.

If the front mounting bracket was not put back in place it could break the starter at the mounting holes
