Unbearable noise after every radio message - squelch doesn't help
I have a brand new Uniden BC72XLT handheld scanner and I've inputted all the frequencies for our local firefighting agency channels. When it's scanning, as soon as it finishes transmitting the radio message, it makes this really loud, horrible scratch sound that lasts anywhere between 3--10 seconds. It's impossible to get rid of it using the squelch and when there's a fair bit of radio traffic, it's unbearable. I haven't had this problem before when I had my trusty Radio Shack scanner, but a friend who also recently bought the same Uniden scanner is having similar problems. Is there something that can be done? Should I just take it back to the store?

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong. Either the scanner is defective or your locale is using some kind of oddball system that's causing the noise. Take it back, show them what it's doing. If possible, try another scanner in the store and see if it does the same thing. You should be entitled to a refund, exchange, or full credit towards a different model . . .
