Unknown Shutdown My computer froze up on me, and I rebooted. After the reboot, it still remained sluggish. It then shut down completely and will not power up. When I open the case, and look at the motherboard, the fans for the cpu and the case start up briefly ( about 3-5 seconds) then shut off. What could it be? I think it's the motherboad, but how can I tell without swapping it out with a known good one?

I think this may be your power supply failing. That would be the best place to start. What you could do for debugging purposes is remove all unneccesary components (extra CD drives, extra PCI cards) and test the system then. Also test the RAM to make sure there is not an issue with one of the sticks (although, the computer would most likely beep at you if there was upon power). Also, if you have a backup harddrive, try swapping it with the current one.
I would mostly guess it is the power supply though. If you have a backup or spare computer, try connecting the power supply to that one and see if it boots ok.
If none of those things work. Perhaps you had a power surge and in that case, what you could do is leave your system off (and unplugged) for a couple of days to let the power supply discharge fully, and then plug it back in and turn it on. Sounds strange, but might just do the trick...If none of those things work. Another thought, have you overclocked the system at all?
