Unrecognized external HDD
Hi, I have a Maxtor Basics 500GB External HDD and had no problems till 2 days ago. Now I get a message "USB Device Not Recognized" every time I plug it. Have tried several trouble shooting steps but nothing seems to resolve the issue

This message usually indicates one of two things:
1 - The driver for the device is not loaded or has become corrupted (I trust that one of the other troubleshooting steps you took included reinstalling the drivers...) or more likely,
2 - The device has malfunctioned. More likely than not, the hard drive itself is OK, only the electronics in the case has failed.
If the device is still under warranty, give Maxtor Customer Service a call and get it replaced. Of course all of the data you have will be gone unless you can convince them to send you ONLY the replacement case and electronics, not the hard drive. In which case you will have to open the old case, remove the hard drive and put it into the new case.
