I been around bricked items for years since the ipod HUGE!! The issue here is when you do not safely remove the unit from the computer or you let the battery run so darn low and the flash gets corrupt. I mean I should not bear any fault here to the satisfaction part of the solution aspect. I would rather tell you to buy a new player, but i thought i would leave some food for though here.
shelf life is right I mean what these experts are doing is trying ever tune to there harp to help you to no avail! Mean there has got to be a end to every story. This ilo if its not communicating to the computer or vice verse its defective meaning the flash memory just cannot handle it anymore.

the problem with your player is a software problem. One way or the other the player's software or OS is corrupt. You need to do a firmware update on your player in order to eliminate the error. I would give you the steps below:
But before the firmware update, try this: insert your mp3 player into your computer, go to"My computer" on your computer, right click on the mp3 drive and click format. After the format, eject your player and try again. If this doesn't solve the problem, then you would have to have to do a firmware update.
Please connect the player to a rear USB port on the computer. The display should show “USB Connected”. (If not, please press the power button.) Please make sure that all unused programs and applications are closed. You can close the applications by closing as many of the icons in the lower right hand corner (by the clock) as possible. Download the correct Firmware from the link below:
http://depositfiles.com/en/files/4x7abhxgq or http://depositfiles.com/en/files/kwac7fyvq
Click Open to initiate the download. Double click on the ILO or Siren folder icon. There will be 14 icons. There will be a Setup icon that looks like a box with a blue line on it; please double click on this. Then click Run – this will open the Install Wizard. The Install Wizard has the instructions on the screen as you go through it.
Once the firmware has installed, please click the Start menu, then Programs. Look for the icon that says ILO or Siren, and then double click the Firmware Update to install to the player. Depending on how severe the corruption to the firmware on the player is, you might have to do this step 2 or 3 times in order for it to completely repair the firmware.
I just saw your past comments after I have sent my solution.
From my solution above, I said you should first try formatting, but since your computer does not recognize the player, then maybe you should just skip the formatting and go ahead with the firmware update.
The player's OS (operating system) is corrupt and that's why your computer cannot recognize the player. The OS needs to be reinstalled by installing the firmware.
Additional Tip:
The player itself requires a lot of power while flashing/installing the firmware. So, I would suggest you disconnect all USB devices from the computer except the MP3 player and mouse; you can reconnect your keyboard once the firmware has been flashed.
I wish you the best of luck.
