The Funai ZV427FX4 doesn't have a tuner. You'll need a set-top box (either a digital tuner or a cable box) that has a composite A/V out. Make sure to use a compatible DVD-R or DVD-RW disc (see page 27 of the manual given below). For basic recording, insert a DVD and press DVD to make sure that the recorder is ready to record to disc instead of video tape. (You may need to format the disc for DVD-RW.) Press Rec Mode until the correct mode is chosen. Then press Input to select composite input 1 or 2 (L1/L2). Set this source to the desired channel. Then press Rec. (For scheduled recording, make sure that the unit is set to DVD. Then press Timer. Follow the on-screen cues to set the time to start and end the recording. Otherwise the steps are the same. Then press Timer Set.) See the manual for screen-shots of the procedure.
The manual for this model is available on the product page: http://www.funaiamerica.com/product/product.php?id=877 . Click on the Downloads tab. The direct link is currently http://www.funaiport.com/download/download.php?id=3361&brand=FUNAI . For older Funai units with an NTSC tuner, you will probably still need the set-top box. However, you can either connect the box to the composite video or RF input. (If you want to record a program from a low-power analog station, you would skip the set-top box.)

I hope this helps.
