Verizon GT704WG DSL Modem wants me to install software
Hi all,
A PC with Verizon's software died. I replaced the PC and this one connects to the net without Verizon's software. I installed Zone Alarm and rebooted. The PC lost the NET connection. I fought it for a while and finally pressed and held the reset button on the modem. Now IE goes to a SETUP page and wants Verizon's software installed on the PC. Motive Smartbrige ect ... (This software killed Outlook, Word, Excel until I removed it) Now MS Office works again, but I do not want VZ's software on my PC.
HOW can I use this modem without installing the software? Can I port into the DSL box and tell it my user name and password via
192.168.1.1 so we can access the net? What is the moden looking for? What does it find on a PC that tells it to install the software?

You dont need ANY software installed to use Verizon DSL service. HArd reset the modem (push reset button for 30 seconds) and let it boot until you get solid power, DSL and internet lights, about 1-2 minutes. use ethernet cable to pc and attempt to open website. If it gets out to internet, your done. Wireless default name and SSID are on sticker on back, If not access GUI (192.168.1.1 OR whatever "ipconfig" shows you in a command prompt) and use admin/password as login credentials or create new password if it prompts you. Go to wireless dropdown and change wireless to whatever. make sure you hit red ACCEPT button on bottom of page or else it wont take your changes.
If my memory serves me, I didn't install the software for my Actiontec modem/router combo. I call Verizon and told them I refused to install the software and they helped step me through getting rid of this garbage. You should never have to install software to get a modem or router to work as any software the comes with it, is simply used to provide easier configuration.
Since I couldn't find anything about bypassing this software, I would suggest contacting Verizon directly. Their technical support should be able to assist you.
