I still don't understand what you are talking about when you say "start side and run side". Sounds as it the bike has an automotive type ignition switch as I've never seen a switch on a Harley with "start - run" on it. It's got a "run / stop" switch on the right handlebar switch housing.
But, you say it does get spark in one position but it backfires and will not run in that position. You also said that it started this four years ago. I conclude that there has been lots of modifications done to this bike and it hasn't run in four years. I'm going to assume that the things you have told me have been done recently.
I'd suspect igniton timing. Has the ignition system been changed? If so, the timing may not have been correctly set. Look in the "nose cone" of the engine and see what is in there. Stock or aftermarket?
