I presume you are using the old 4400 as you posted here---- here is my solution --uninstal the drivers form device manager unplug the power plug on back of scanner --go to visioneer website and get the xp driver for the 4400 scanner--save instead of running the download http://support.visioneer.com/products/home/EOL/4400/downloads.asp click the downloaded installer and click compatable --make to run in xp mode and click OK--install the drivers as prompted when installed restart if prompted then plug the power back into the scanner----instal drivers as prompted --unfortunately --vista wont put the icon in my computer like xp does--the solution is to open program WINDOWS PHOTO GALLERY click file at top then import from scanner etc --the familiar page will come up with your scanner to preview or scan as you did before vista----this is the way i use it on vista home basic and i dont have any problems--hopefully you wont either
