Sounds like you've removed the "earth" wire which connects to ground upon releasing the "dead man's handle". I believe this is what stops the engine. Interesting though, that you got it to run by removing this. Could be the coil is breaking down. Could also have given me an idea to test mine that way. I have no spark.
