The fuel pump cutoff switch is not the cause here, I think you are saying you ran out of Gas? 1st not all cars have a fuel pump switch, and it only cuts off in a rear end collision of over 3 times the force of gravity, its formal name is an "Inertia Switch". When you run out of gas the fuel pump runs dry and at the same time it overheats (the tiny fuel pump uses the gas to cool and lubricate), if the car is older this destroys the fuel pump and it will need to be replaced.
