Washing machine won't spin until open and reclosed the lid

My estate washing machine trys to spin, but usually will not spin until I go in, open the lid, then reclose the lid. Once I reclose the lid it makes a clunking noise, then will start spinning. The machine is less then two years old, so it's pretty irratating.
