I too went through the Chkdsk, reboot, etc for a 500GB MyBook whick an HP laptop running XP couldn't see. Lucyfr's simple solution "try unplugging it completely, putting the USB in THEN the power supply" finally worked! So simple I nearly wept.
Hi guys,
I don't know if this will help you but just had same infuriating problem with my Western Digital Essential Book 250GB.
I wiped my PC and reinstalled windows and hey presto! It couldn't see my drive and I tried for a while pulling out the USB and trying different ports...
I connected it to my laptop and got the same problem, had a fit and pulled the mains plug and then plugged it back in... And it kicked in! I put it back on the PC (USB in but power off, then plugged it in the mains) and it kicked in there too.
Therefore I suggest trying the drive with another system to boot it. Once the laptop recognised it, so then did the PC. Also try unplugging it completely, putting the USB in THEN the power supply...
Might have just been a fluke but hope it helps someone here...!
It doesnt work on the computer i started it with.
I met similar problem as stated above. Since 3 weeks ago, my laptop (Win XP) did not recognise my WD hard disk even the disk manager/file management ... . I have hooking it up to another Laptops (such as Vista & Win XP again), it still not detected.
Is there anyone can help??? sigh~~~

We had a simmilar problem, the disk was initialised with vista. It does not read on any other computor on our network. I recently aquired a second vista computor and tried it out on that. Sure enough it works. Thus the problem is that if it was initialised on vista, only vista systems will read it and not xp or 2000. hopes this helps
