We have a SAMSUNGA LCD TV. We also have a Panasonic DVD and JVC tape players connected. All works well. Able to watch tapes or DVDs. Problem, cannot figure out how to copy onto a disc. I have not found any instructions on "how to" record a program onto a DVD in my paperwork.

You indicated you have a DVD PLAYER, not DVD recorder. You cannot record on to a DVD on a player, you need to buy a DVD recorder/player. Unlike a VCR which stands for Video Cassett Recorder which can record and playback video. DVD recorder technolgy much more complicated.
Sorry for the misundersatnding, my understanding from reading a user manual of a DVD recorder, when you play record button it automatically formats the disc.
