All due respect, but if your ceiling fan is 30 years old, replace it - soon. If you choose not to do that, Having installed at least 15 of them over the years, I can with certainty tell you that the hookup is exactly the same. It's a little more involved if you have a unit in which the lights can be turned on and off without engaging the fan - or vice versa. That may be why you have "wires hanging out of it".
