We seem to have no hot water about once a week and its not from excessive usage. The reset button on the top element of our twin heating unit trips off every couple of days. I reset the push button and it heats up again. Why would this keep needing to be reset

It sounds thermostat failure. It intermittently does not open or the overlimit is getting weak. replace your thermostats and this will fix your problem.
