First try playing a different source/input on your TV - a DVD player or something. Does it still show rainbow on the screen? If so, the TV has a serious problem.
Unfortunately, modern day LCD TVs aren't repairable - they are built using such tiny machines that there are few parts a repairman can cheaply swap out. The repair costs generally exceed that of the cost of buying a new TV.
If the TV is no longer under warranty (don't forget if you bought it with a credit card, your card probably gives you an extra year of warranty coverage - call them and ask), your most practical approach is to call it a day, recycle the old one, and buy a new one on sale.
However, if the rainbow image is NOT happening on another input, that means the problem is with your source (cable box?) - try checking that all the cables are firmly connected, and if it's still a problem, try a different cable (or try your cable on a different TV). Sometimes connectors can get dirty or bent (or broken internally) and cause weird graphical behaviour.
