Depends on the type of camera. With compacts and super-zooms and such, the image sensor is usually located somewhere directly behind the lens (which in most cases can NOT be removed). On a DSLR however, they're typically located behind the mirror. Many/most DSLR's have a function in the menu that allows the mirror to lock in the up position to allow for cleaning of the sensor...this function is NOT usually available on most non-DSLR cameras (compacts/point & shoots, etc).
