We turned the key to start it, there was a loud bang, it was so bad that it blew a hole in the exhaust and blew the air box to bits.

This is usually caused due to misfire in engine. When did you do a tune up on it? After misfire, usually it melts the honeycone in the cat. converter. If engine light is ON, need to scan it for code
