What causes black, soot-like dirt in heating ducts?
Getting a burnt smell when I turn on the furnace. Blower has been cleaned, hall air-filter is clean. I used a long vacuum hose to get down the vents to part of the ducts(a few feet in) and didn't pick up any dust, but a black soot-like dirt. Any ideas what's causing that and how to resolve it? thanks, diana

I would open your air handler cover so you can see the blower wheel (Fan inside the unit) and get a flashlight and verify the wheel is not caked up with dust/dirt, if it is it will need to be pulled out and cleaned.
Also you will want to inspect the part of your evaporator coil on the bottom side, the part thats not easy to get to and veryfy that it is clean, not just the part you can see easily but the part thats hard to get to. As a tech i simply use a light and a extendabkle mirror to inspect.
Hope this helps.
