EC stands for Economy mode. This is a setting that tells the computer to check the temperature of the spa less frquently, as well as running fewer filter cycles. Spas should be set to EC while you are away on vacation or not planning to use it for a while
This is completely correct. In economy mode, the heater will only work during the filter cycles. EC can be used for a vacation mode, but not receommended in the cold winter months in snowy climates since if the filter cycle is set too short and the spa can't heat outside of the filter cycle, there is a risk of freezing. Sure the secondary freeze protect would kick in and all pumps would automatically activate to try to regain temp, but I always leave the spa in standard mode, or you can turn temp down to 80s so spa still cycles and filters if out of town for a week or two. This is completely correct.
