What is the optimum operating temperature for a 2002 8.1L workhorse with Banks Power. My motorhome runs at 150 degrees. The electric fans come on at 160 degrees. Seems wrong to me
Wondering if running cooler will affect fuel mileage.

You are correct ,a cool running engine will never come out of open loop and will run rich until the logic module see's at least 180 degrees of coolant temp,at that point it looks at all sensor inputs and calculates the correct fuel trim according to engine performance as evaluated by all sensors. Think of it as having the choke on until the engine is warm. The easiest way to confirm is hook up to an engine scanner and look for fluctuating sensor values,which will indicate that there data is being evaluated
Steve,actually it lowers the underhood ambient temps by replacing bulky exhaust manifolds with free flowing header style exhaust .
Steve as a final thought , I believe that your thermostat is probably stuck open, you should see coolant temps between 185 and 200 after initial warm up
