When i plug it in the lights come on, respond to me pushing buttons, but the sound isn't going through. i tried inputting both a microphone and an electric guitar, and i tried outputting to both a computer and an amp. ideas?

Make sure you have the input and output cables to the correct side. The power should come on when you plug in the INPUT cable from teh guitar. A mic MAY have insufficient output to drive this. You may need to use a guitar that has a preamp built in.
Alrighty I figured it out. The cable I was using to connect from the pedal to the amp had a busted connection. Different cable works fine.
