When I plunged in FANTOM firewire and USB external HD (I only use the USB) at windows start it said it wanted to (blue screen) check drive for errors. I agreed and it stopped half way at 41% and did not go any further. I restarted computer and has not been able to read from external drive.Not recognised it says. Can you help please. It worked fine all these times on my XP desk top. This happened after I connected to my laptop which uses VISTA, then I again connected back to my desk top.Will not work even on VISTA

It is entirely possible that your external hard drive is failing. I would recommend downloading Seatools for Windows (link below) and run extended hard drive test on it. Chances are if it is failing, it still recognizes within the system, but it is not readable enough for windows to display it and allow you to browse.
