When I put the gear shift in reverse and start to backing up the car, the gear shift starts to move and I hear a thumping like noise coming from my transmission. Whle the gear shift is in drive, ther is no movement of the gear shift nor is there any noise

Check the engine and transmission mounts. While under the car, check the u'joints and driveshaft center support.
