When I try to perform the first hotsync on my Palm m500 (bought recently, cheaply since it's an old model), I get the message: "The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

Have you installed well your palm desktop software. Install version 4.1.4 from here. its the one that is compatible with your M500. ensure the proper driver is installed and check your cable too.

You could specify by name the expert you want to help you. otherwise, in this case, i recommend you perform a hard reset. follow instructions on this page, scroll down to palm m series (m500). also ensure that you have installed the version 4.1.4 i recommended above.

Look ....I got an idea just to check the functionality ...of the other things involved...
I dont think that it is damaged...probably it is an issue of streaming or so...I suspect the computer to have something and crash the sync...so take the driver and go to another computer ....ask a friend or so ...if you can try one with a much compatible windows...cause if you are on windows 7 it is kinda have issues of compatibility ...thinking that the model of your device it is a little older it is a possibility ...So, my advice is to try one with XP on ...ask a friend or so...Just install the driver and try a sync in another computer ...if it works ..it means that the firewall or the antivirus or the operation system in your computer is to blame...alo may be damaged or something ...and it do not sustain the buffering for the job ...anyway ..in short change the computer for a try ..and see whats happening ...if it does the same at least you know that it is the device to blame and we will see what sis to be done ..maybe we try a program to do that another than the one you have ...
This message is not due to a setup its due to the palm not communicating with the hotsyc cradle and that right there is no fun in the park. you will need to have the pda repaired www.pdarepair.com does a excellent job and there not affiliated with fixya but i have had nothing but good reports from them and they do get the job done right.
sorry for the bad news but this is what happens with these palms and its unfortunate. Based on your error message and what you told me the word stated are facts and not fiction if you do not trust my word call palm or pdarepair.

I feel you got a communication's problem being a palm expert and have 15 years in the field. I also feel you been there a quite a good time "expert shopping" I feel fixya has gave you allot of face time with this issue hence this is where the "moderator comes in with the gavel" I am trying to help you here and without full investigation before just trowing me in the recycle bin i want you to welcome the fact that the palm is not working with the sync software. Shoot try another computer and find the same facts.
I am just laying it down as it is. $40 for a palm that does not sycn might not be a fault of all the experts that got shopped here. You tried what:
Palm 4.0
took out the battery (wow that worked?)
un installed and reinstalled
but do not want to visit or give face time to someone that has experience in repair of these units that is visiting 100 percent fact about your unfortunate problem. I am trying to get this resolved.
Try a different machine i bet you get the same outcome.

oh one other thing is the computer you using to sych with a dual core or multi core processor? if so that is your issue as well!!

Please find some simple solutions which may solve the problem below:
1- First please update your software to sync. Or reinstalling the software may solve this problem.
2- Be sure that, before synchronizing, the Hot Sync Manager application must be running.
3- Disconnect your palm, remove the both side of the cable from the device and PC. Clean the hot sync connector on the palm blowing on the connector to remove the debris if any. Check the connectors to PC.
4- Remove the battery of your palm and replace back to do soft reset. And also restart your PC. Sometimes this simple action may prevent the other program conflicts and solves the problem.
5- Delete the pending messages, alarms and other planned duties on your palm device not to conflict to sync.
