Your best option is to use a seperate amp with sub output from the audio outputs on the back of your TV. use this amp to power the sub and a good pair of speakers, and you'll have quality sound.
It is possible to prevent the TV's internal speakers from cutting when you use the headphone socket, but it means going inside your TV, and if your not skilled, you can easily blow your TV (and yourself) up. You just need to re-wire the headphone socket on the TV to stop it cutting the internal spaekers.
