This could be a sign of a short in the electrical components and power should be disconnected so not to cause any damage to the dishwasher or more important you and your house. The only other thing that I've ever seen make a smell like this, is when something plastic is melted on the heating element at the bottom of the dishwasher and every time it calls for heat, it melts more. Its usually a kitchen utensil or one of the wheels from the racks. Hope this helps.
