When starting the engine the dashboard lights are flickering and there is a fast clicking noisefrom the starter motor. Could this be the solonoid as there was no problem starting it up yesterday and has always run spot on

That is a sign the the starter is not getting enough power to turn the starter over so the solenoid is struggling,have the battery check and possibly replaced or just a good charge may bring it back to life.
