When the softener and conditioner is on we loose water pressure but when we turn them off there is lots of pressure why??? is there a filter to change? we have lots of iron in our water. the house is 8 years old, and the water system as well

If there is an extreme pressure loss with softener/conditioner in service the outlet manifold is probably plugged. This would need to be replaced or cleaned by a service tech and determine why it plugged (sediment)? If there is a separate iron filter the restriction may very well be from this. Iron can build up and greatly reduce pressure. Manifold may be plugged or media is fouled with iron. Especially if it is a greensand filter. RJ
