I would normally espect to find a white, green black and red wire in a ceiling fan. This would allow a ground (green), neutral (white) and two power wires, one for fan and one for light. IF you had two switches on the wall, one of the switch wires would go to the light and the other to the fan. If you have only ONE switch, the black and red go together with the black in the ceilling.
Now then, SOMETIMES, there is a hot wire in the ceiling AND a switch leg from the wall switch. In that case, the HOT wire goes to the fan (you would control the fan locally) and the switch leg (wire from the wall switch)would control the light.
