Where is the switch? I had potato peels and celery, flipped the wall switch on for the disposal, then suddenly the water has started backing up out of the hole with black machinery looking stuff coming out. What's going on?

Black machinery looking stuff is not a good sign.
You may find a reset button on the bottom of the motor - it wsill probably be red. Based on the machinery looking stuff coming out, you may not want to press the button. Call a plumber.
