where should I be looking for the damage - is it likely to be the timer board and is this the same as a pcb or controller board as I was thinking of trying to replace it? Thanks

Careful inspection should show where or if there has been water in the machine. Don;t go buying expensive spares without doing some basic tests. What isn't working? Does it power up or is it completely dead? If the valve had leaked after freezing the inside of the machine would have been flooded after it thawed and so would your kitchen (or wherever the machine is). Have you checked mains supply in the machine? Give more details and i will try to help.
