Didnt specify vehicle --generic answer --sound like your engine has a belt driven fan /water pump possible behind --check belts and pulleys also look at possible water pump--alternator-power steering pump and pulleys for damage or seizure --have vehicle scanned when possible most auto shops offer this service for free

Bit vague but I would start with the coolant. Is there any coolant in the system ? Might have caused an over-heat.
Which warning lights flashed apart from the battery ?
Check your water and oil (by "water" I mean coolant).
An over heating engine will cause all sorts of christmas tree lights to go beserk.
