Whirlpool ultimate care II, Top agitator not working. I got it apart and can see the agitator dog gear not catching, unable to free the gear from the clips. Suggestions?

I have the same machine and have the dogs in my hand, all teeth are worn out, can overloading a machine cause the teeth to wear and break?
Stand on agitator,pull top section upwards,the agitators are meant to be disassembled this way,sometimes they are stubborn,and you cannot service agitator if agit is still in the machine...
