Why does my oil light come on erratically? I have replaced sensor switch, no foreign matter in oil or pan. 2000 Plymouth voyager 3.0 engine. Richard Edwards
Hi. Due to the fact that the oil level is fine and not contaminated, This will indicate that there may be a more serious issue at hand. As stated in your post, you have changed the sensor and checked the state of the oil. This in return will lead to a more serious issue concerning your oil pump. To isolate the issue, simply, have an oil pressure test ran on this engine. Now, if the test proves that the pressure is indeed lower than factory specifications, this will confirm that the pump is damaged. Have the pump, and oil pump screen replaced, in this case.
NOTE_ I would, also, recommend to have the engine flushed asap. The oil pressure test will require a special tool that you can purchase at your local auto parts store. It is quite easy to preform. The device inserts directly into the oil pressure switch location for easy testing. I would also advise to check the block for any possible leaks near the oil pan and head gasket areas. Although you did not mention any leakages, this will be good preventive maintenance and will usually catch any head gasket or oil pan issues that can cause loss in pressure and compression.
